There’s something about cottagecore that just makes sense with vintage.
Florals, old quilts, wicker baskets, worn-in denim, tiny prints, lace collars, old dishes, soft colors — basically all the things that look like they could have been found tucked away in your grandma’s house.
And the best part? You don’t have to dress like you’re headed to churn butter to get the look.
Start with one really good vintage piece
The easiest way to wear cottagecore without feeling like you’re wearing a costume is to let one vintage piece do most of the work. That could be a floral dress, an embroidered blouse, a cardigan, a prairie skirt or even a pair of old overalls.
Then mix it with things you already own.
A vintage floral dress with sneakers. An old blouse with your favorite jeans. A chunky cardigan thrown over a simple outfit.
That mix of old and new is what makes it feel like you instead of a costume. Modern cottagecore styling often uses exactly this approach—letting one or two romantic or vintage-inspired pieces carry the aesthetic while grounding them with everyday basics.
Don’t forget the little things
Sometimes the accessory is the whole outfit.
Look for old brooches, scarves, woven bags, little purses, lockets, straw hats and jewelry that looks like it has already lived a life or two.
And cottagecore doesn’t have to stop at your closet.
Old floral dishes, baskets, linens, pottery, candlesticks and slightly imperfect antiques can bring that same collected feeling into your home. Vintage accessories and secondhand finds are a natural part of the cottagecore home aesthetic too.
Don’t try too hard
This might be our biggest rule at DearElliemae.
If you love it, wear it. Use it. Put it in your house.
The best spaces and outfits look collected over time, not bought all at once to match an aesthetic.
And luckily for us, vintage has already done the collecting part.
